My Awesome Summer Internship(s)

This is my desk at the DCNR office. I get my own cubical and TWO monitors this year!

What an unbelievealble couple of amazing opportunities I have this summer! First of all, I have an internship at DCNR (Department of Conservation of Natural Resources) working for the landscape architects in the Bureau of Facility Design and Construction. If you recall, I worked for DCNR last summer, but interned with Agroforesty. It has been super enjoyable so far! I’ve gotten to work on construction documents, been to meetings, and done a rendering or two! I am also now on the 8th floor and have decided for some reason that I should take the stairs more often, but by the time I reach my floor, I am out of breath and trying not to breath loudly while logging on to my computer is surprisingly difficult.

The other thing I got to do is something so so amazing is work at the GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE!!!! Like the GOVERNOR of PENNSYLVANIA! I’m so excited! I get to help design a rain garden, as well as helping with some various other projects on the mansion’s grounds. All of the staff are friendly and welcoming and I can’t believe I get to work with them! Also, they let me play the Steinway grand piano in the main hall! Very exciting times in the life of Zoe!

Here are some pictures of the Governor’s Residence:

The Rose Garden

And… BEES! They have a beekeeper on staff and built this display so kids that visit can learn about the importance of bees! They are also used to pollinate the roses and other flowers on the property!

And Here is where I’ll be designing the rain garden:

3rd Year, Oh Dear

So we are about one day from my return to school. Today being the last full day at home :(. But here’s to the start of junior year! Woo. But, plot twist, I am not living in the dorms this year since, partly due to my actions (or lack there of) I did not actually request an on campus housing contract…haha oops. Consequently, I had to look for an apartment off campus. And after an emotionally exhausting winter of searching, I found a wonderful little place down town. Sadly, it is incredibly far away from the Stuckeman building where most of my days are spent (as you may recall from my previous posts). But at least I’ll get more steps in

Vincent, on the left, with all his body parts still intact. Parsley is behind him on the right.

Another new and exciting thing this year, I have birds!!! Two cute budgies named parsley (the green one) and uh… well I haven’t actually named the other one. I just call it Little Blue Bird. They both hate me at the moment but hopefully one day they will not hate me! That’s the goal anyway. Little Blue Bird is not the original (or OG as the young folks are saying) inhabitant, however. I had originally bought a different bird (named Vincent), to accompany Parsley but in a sad turn of events, Vincent escaped from the cage. His freedom was not long lived as the ferocious cat decided he looked delicious, so she ate him. It was SO sad.

Little Blue Bird now on the left. So cute! And still living!

A frightening and also exciting thing that happened over the summer: I got accepted into Schreyer Honors College! I mostly did it because I want to wear the gold medal at graduation. Not sure if all the extra work and that whole “honors thesis” thing will be worth it but it’s too late now!!! Additionally, I’m banking on getting a free t-shirt at Schreyer orientation. Luckily, there is a separate orientation for gateway students and incoming freshmen because I’d rather not have to feel like a dumb lump next to all these newbie geniuses. Personal feelings. Don’t get me wrong, I am very excited to be in Schreyer! (Even though I have continual issues with correctly spelling “Schreyer”. That “e” before the “y” really gets me. Anyway, I actually think it will be a beneficial experience and what not. AND priority scheduling! No complaints about that!

So anyway, it’s definitely going to be an interesting year!

A New Abode and the Swiftly Moving Summer

Hi friends! It has been a while, since I don’t usually post things in the summer time but some exciting stuff is happening!

First off, I am not going to be living in the dorms in the upcoming year! I will be living in a little apartment with myself and two cute birds. Because of the multitude of things that I have and would like to furnish my apartment with, we had to make several trips over the summer to bring everything up. I was also allowed to paint some of the walls, so I also did that. It looks very cozy and cute. (Pictures in a later post becuase I am lazy). Also, I finished my intern ship about two weeks ago (Which by the ways was when I had actually intened to post this).

I cannot believe that summer is almost over! In a few short days I will be returning to scool!!!

This post is not as long as I had anticipated. Many apologies on my part.

Oh wait! Here are some things that I did this summer over my internship:

Buffer graphic:

Lovely buffer5

These super long factsheets with information about differnent plants you can put in buffers. They print like a booklet. The pictures are small becuase do you really want to read all that information?

I also got to make some cool logos for various groups and stuff. This first logo for NEMA (Northeast/Mid-atlantic) Agroforestry was the only one that actually got used. haha. but they all looked pretty cool and I’m proud of them.

Actually I lied I think they might use the woodland stewardship one for something. Also the green is showing up brighter than it’s supposed to be for some reason.

Anyway, I also did some other cool things! I talked with a landscape architect who works for DCNR and he let me do some cool 3D sketchup modeling of an area of a state park that they are redesigning

Also, my little side project with the chairs is completed! They are so cute and I love them!

I also painted and sold a chair to my Spanish teacher from high school! (Picture is not the best quality)

If My Life Were A TV Show, This Would be Season Two

WHERE DID MY SUMMER GO?!?!?!

I have to start school next week! Ack! I’m not ready for this. But I guess I actually did a lot this summer.

I did lots of painting! I painted some ukulele cases…

and the doors of the gym where I do gymnastics… (sorry about the reflection)

And finally, after putting it off for most of the summer, I painted my mom’s rain barrel!

I also drove on the highway for the first time ALL BY MY SELF. This to you may seem like not much of an accomplishment but I am very proud of not chickening out 🙂

My family vacation was to the one and only Yosemite National Park! It certainly lived up to the hype, but there were a ton of tourists there. As much effort as the NPS puts into preserving the natural landscape for everyone to enjoy, it still gets trampled all over by people who are trying to get the experience. Don’t get me wrong, this place is amazing.

After we visited Yosemite, we made our way to San Francisco where we also did some cool stuff.

My mom drove down Lombard Street, also called the Crooked Street, which was super cool! Even though you can’t tell from my poor photography skills, the street was very pretty. There were also plenty of tourists sanding along the sides taking pictures and watching all the cars brave the crooked road.

And we also went by the Mythbusters studio, “M5 Industries”

And also, I accidentally made a scrambled egg in the shape of a chick!
